The undersigned rights organizations express their deep concern regarding the Ministry of Social Solidarity’s latest draft of the bill regulating non-governmental organizations, and declare it a flagrant breach of the constitution and Egypt’s international obligations. The law, if adopted, will criminalize the operation of NGOs and subordinate them to the security establishment, shutting down the public sphere in Egypt to all but regime supporters. The undersigned organizations demand that the president reject this and any other law that contravenes the constitution and Egypt’s international obligations.

The Egyptian Coalition for Monitoring of Elections (ECME) continues, Wednesday 28th of May 2014, to witness the Presidential Elections and issues its eleventh statement detailing all violations observed by ECME in the third day of the voting.
As the second voting day begins, ECME continues to monitor the Presidential Elections; the second milestone of the Roadmap. The first elections day witnessed a number of violations including delayed opening of the polling stations, banning observers from accessing polling stations, group vote and campaigning activities. ECME observes the violations committed during the electoral process.
Within ECME’s efforts to monitor the Egyptian Elections, the Media Unit at Andalus Institute for Tolerance and Anti-Violence Studies monitors the performance of media with regard to the coverage of the electoral process and adherence to the professional standards announced by the Presidential Elections Committee (PEC) to ensure balanced coverage and equal opportunities for both Candidates. Hence, we monitored a sample consisting of five independent and state-owned TV stations (Aljazeera Mubasher Masr, CBC, Al-Qahira Wal-Nas, the Egyptian Satellite Channel and Sada El-Balad), and of five independent and state-owned printed newspapers (Elwattan, Al Ahram, Al-Akhbar, Al-Shorouk and Al-Wafd) in addition to three websites (Alyoum7, Masrawy and Rassd) from 9 AM to 9 PM.
